Chemotherapy Breast Cancer Medication

Chemotherapy breast cancer medications are no longer the treatment of choice in most breast cancer cases. However, if it is appropriate, it is likely to produce highly successful, long term results.

Chemotherapy is the use of specific medications to fight cancer. As pharmacology has advanced, the medications are more efficient, safer and more targeted, and have fewer side effects than those used in previous years. A drug ‘cocktail’ is now often used to combat side effects, which makes the treatment more potent.

The chemotherapy breast cancer medications work by hampering cell division. As breast cancer develops when cells in the breast cancer tissue grow abnormally, this helps to stop further growth and spread of the tumor.

In more advanced cancer cases, chemotherapy is often used to help eliminate cancer cells. When metastasization occurs (the growth and spread of the primary tumor to secondary areas where further tumors are formed), chemotherapy will often be used to combat any further spread.

Though is it not known why in many cases, cancers can recur. It is possible that in some situations, the cancer wasn’t eliminated completely during treatment. In other cases, the cancer may regenerate because the root cause may still be present. Where a recurrence does happen, chemotherapy is often used as a treatment option.

There are complications that arise from using chemotherapy breast cancer medications, most of which stem from the side effects the drugs cause. Though advances and improvements in the drugs have been made, healthy cells are still often affected by the treatment. When healthy cells are attacked, the general health of the often patient declines.

As good health is needed to help combat cancer, chemotherapy can be more damaging than effective in some cases. A similar problem occurs with radiation therapy as it compromises the immune system, making the body less effective at fighting the cancer.

Patients undertaking chemotherapy treatments often find that their digestive system is affected, and suffer from nausea. Many patients will also experience hair loss. A more harmful side effect can see bone marrow composition being affected by the drugs. As one of the main functions of bone marrow is to help produce red and while blood cells, this can be extremely detrimental to the patient.

It is also possible for damage to heart, kidney and other organs to occur, though as the cells in these organs don’t divide as regularly, this is far less common. Research has associated loss of concentration and memory with chemotherapy in some patients. The reproductive cycle is sometimes altered in older female patients, resulting in premature menopause. Men too, can develop breast cancer, though they are obviously not going to be affected by this particular side effect.

Chemotherapy breast cancer medications today are however far more effective than those in previous years. Some can be specifically targeted to help cut off supply vessels which feed the tumors. Chemotherapy today is designed specifically for each individual patient, and targets their particular needs, making it a far more effective treatment.

Despite the potential side effects, chemotherapy is a vital factor in helping to eliminate cancer once it develops. Medical advances mean that chemotherapy breast cancer medications help to provide victims with an increased chance of survivability, and with fewer side effects than in the past.
