Dental Visit, Checkup and Examination

Very few people enjoy going to see the dentist. Some people like to have their teeth cleaned, but others know that when they go in there, it’s going to be painful and expensive. There are two different types of dental visits – dental checkups and a complete dental examination.

You should go to see a dentist two times every year in order to have a professional look at your teeth. This way, you can stop something bad from really happening in your mouth. Schedule an appointment for a routine check-up. When you go in for your overall review, your professional dentist will look at all of your teeth for signs of decay and other issues that could affect your dental hygiene. If problems are discovered, they will be early enough that you and the dentist can figure a solution before the issue becomes worse.

Your teeth will receive a deep-cleaning while you are in the office. You will also receive a treatment to help remove any tartar build up that might have occurred in between your visits. Your teeth will be polished and you can enjoy an extra-strength fluoride treatment. If needed, the dentist will take some x-rays as well. For this reason, many people will enjoy a visit to the dentist because when they leave, their teeth are the cleanest they have been since their last dentist visit!

If you haven’t been to the dentist in quite some time or are visiting a new dentist, you will be given a comprehensive dental exam instead of the routine check-up. With a comprehensive exam, your dentist can get a better idea of your dental history and the current state of your teeth and gums and other soft tissue in your mouth. If you have redness or puffiness, it might be a good indication of bigger problems that might need to be addressed.

During the comprehensive exam, you will receive a thorough look at your mouth. The dentist will take a new set of x-rays to put on file and immediately alert him or her if there are future abnormalities. The dentist will also feel your saliva glands and lymph nodes to make sure everything is normal there. You will be asked to open and close your mouth, moving it one side to another. The dentist here is looking for the temporomandibular joint to make sure that it is working properly when you move your mouth. You might also notice the dentist is checking your bite to make sure it is in proper alignment.

The dentist might ask you what prescription medications you are on. Make sure you know the medications and the dosage so that they can record this in their file. They will also want to know if you have been sick lately so that they can know of any diseases that might have affected your teeth. Some of the anesthesia they give in surgery can mix poorly with prescription medications, so knowing this information up front will help to protect you.
