Coping with Diabetes Symptoms and Treatments
Many people suffer from diabetes symptoms. In earlier times one might
feel once they have been diagnosed they are going to face a
death sentence. This is no longer the case. Technology is
advancing so fast that many are living a long, happy and
healthy life after being diagnosed.
Diabetes is an elevated glucose or sugar level in the blood stream. This is
usually constant and over a period of time, not something that is diagnosed
after one test reveals elevated levels. Diabetes is a serious condition that
does require medical attention, however with a change in diet and medication the
effects that once would kill can now be maintained. Some of the more serious
effects of diabetes is coma, longer healing time for cuts and kidney damage.
With proper treatment the risk of serious problems related to diabetes is
minimized. Having the medication as well as the disease monitored on a nearly
daily basis can minimize ill effects over time. In most cases it is not required
for a medical professional to see the diagnosed person on a daily basis, the
monitoring can be done by the individual themselves.
Even though technology is rapidly growing, the actual causes of diabetes is
still not all that clear. In general it is known and understood that diabetes is
a result of either not enough insulin being made by the body or too much of it
being made by the body, or even the body being unable to break down the insulin
within the body in order to use it effectively.
In one type of diabetes the islet cells within the pancreas do not make the
correct amount of insulin for the body to properly function. The glucose of the
blood needs to be able to enter the cells correctly for the body to be able to
use it to have energy. This is known as type 1 diabetes. In the next type of
diabetes called type 2 diabetes the insulin is usually resisted which causes the
glucose in the blood to be too much.
Most medical professionals will agree, diabetes is hereditary disease. In the
vast majority of cases, when a person looks closely at their family medical
history they often find that family members have also been diagnosed with having
diabetes. However, it is also known that the environment and lifestyle that you
live can also effect your diabetes. For example, you can minimize your risks of
having to medicate your diabetes if you know of your family medical history
early on and change your eating habits to healthier ones. More than likely you
will find that a diagnosis of diabetes is a combination of the previously
mentioned.
There is however another form of diabetes called Gestational Diabetes. This
particular type of diabetes is found in pregnant mothers. It does only seem to
effect about 3% of these women only during their pregnancies. For the most part
the diabetes symptoms becomes present around the 24-28 week of pregnancy. In the vast
majority of cases of gestational diabetes the diabetes goes away just after the
delivery of the child.
In most of the cases, there are some common diabetes symptoms. Thirst that does not seem to be quenchable and or frequent urination. Diabetes
is not the only cause for these symptoms, however if diabetes runs in your
family you should contact a medical professional and have the appropriate
testing done.
To be diagnosed with diabetes all that is required is a small blood sample.
From the blood sample the levels of glucose is determined. From these results it
can usually be determined if you have diabetes. In some cases a second blood
test is done to confirm the first results. After that your doctor will begin to
treat you.
