Erectile Dysfunction Diagnosis Tests

It seems silly to talk about erectile dysfunction diagnosis tests considering the way the problem presents itself. It is necessary, however, to properly diagnose whatever underlying factors may be causing it. In some cases, the problem may be a common issue of impotence. This will determine what type of treatment options will be pursued.

Then again, there is an array of erectile dysfunction diagnosis tests and methods exist to handle both situations.

Erections are achieved through a number of factors that are related to one another. Obviously, arousal is required. There are, however, two key components to arousal, mental and physical. Without one or the other, ED is possible. Both factors are considered during ED diagnosis tests.

There are a number of physical factors that can interrupt the erection process. Cardiovascular and neurological tests will be involved in the diagnosis process. There may be damage to the blood vessels that carry blood to the pelvic area. It may also be a problem with the nerves that are responsible for stimulating an erection. Hormone levels can also be checked with an endocrine test.

Penile vascular pressure will also be checked with a cavernosometry ED test. The blood flow into the penis during erection is about seven times more than normal. ED can result from a blockage of the required blood in that area. This blood flow is checked by injecting dye into the affected area to observe the blood flow.

Many underlying conditions can be determined through neurological ED tests. In rare cases, this may turn up spinal chord injuries or brain tumors. More commonly found issues include insensitive nerves in or around the genitals. Other possible causes include trauma, drug interactions and other issues.

Symptoms other than the actual ED could indicate underlying diseases or conditions that the doctor could test for. More, and younger people are suffering from diabetes these days. This is due to population growth and the increasing number cases of obesity. This can be checked for with a simple blood test.

Sometimes it is unnecessary to undergo several expensive erectile dysfunction diagnosis tests because the underlying cause is something fairly obvious. In other cases, the treatment for the condition is the same as for the cause. Sometimes the ED is the only condition that needs to be treated.

An example would be if a man begins to complain of erectile dysfunction shortly after undergoing prostate cancer surgery. In this case, it is unnecessary to undergo several tests when the cause of the problem is fairly obvious. It may also be very clear if the patient reports a history of prolonged drug use or excessive alcohol consumption. Few doctors will waste the time and money involved in extensive testing when there is such an obvious cause.

Sometimes this will mean there is no addition erectile dysfunction diagnosis tests necessary, especially when the treatment is the same for the cause and the symptoms. Sometimes all that is needed is some time, or possibly a prescription for Viagra.
