Erectile Dysfunction Medications - Viagra, Cialis and Levitra

Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are the three most popular erectile dysfunction medications. Even though they are quite similar in the way they work, there are some differences to be aware of.

Viagra
Pfizer makes Viagra, which is the brand name for sildenafil citrate. Millions of men have benefited from its effects and is by far one of the most popular erectile dysfunction medications since the FDA approved it in 1998. It has proven to be a very safe form of treatment and is available in tablet form.

Erections are caused by stimulation of the nerves in the penis, causing a large amount of blood to be sent into the spongy tissue that is in the penis. When this is not able to happen naturally, Viagra will help to correct this problem. Viagra prevents the blood from being able to flow back out of the penis tissue. The more blood that is retained by this tissue, the stiffer the penis will become.

When used properly, Viagra has been successful in treating around 90% of erectile dysfunction cases. It will usually begin working in about a half hour, and continue to be effective for between two and four hours. This will usually give a man plenty of time since the average sexual encounter is reported to last 30 minutes.

Cialis
Cialis is the brand name for tadalafil, which is manufactured by the Eli Lilly company. The major difference between this and Viagra is in the dosage. Other than that, it works similarly. The prescribed dosages range between 5mg and 20mg. The average Viagra dosage is between 25mg and 100mg.

Another difference between the two erectile dysfunction medications is in how long the effects last. Cialis will sometimes work for up to 36 hours after taking the pill. Approximately 78% of ED cases are effectively treated with Cialis. The trade off is a longer lasting medication with a slightly less percentage of effectiveness.

Levitra
Bayer Pharmaceuticals is the producer of the drug called Levitra. It is marketed by GlaxoSmithKline and Schering-Plough. The clinical name for this drug is vardenafil. This also works by preventing blood from escaping from the spongy tissue of the penis. The drug is reported to have about an 80% rate of effectiveness. The effects and duration of Levitra are similar to that of Viagra. It begins working in about a half hour and lasts for up to four.

Summary
Since all three of these drugs work similarly, it will be a matter of preference and individual circumstance that determines which erectile dysfunction medications you choose. Factors that come into play will include medical history, symptoms and diagnosis, age, overall health, and others.

The main thing to be careful of is interaction with other erectile dysfunction medications. For example, someone who is taking nitroglycerin type medications for heart disease may want to seek other options. Each of the three has it's own list of side effects and drug interactions that you need to be aware of.

Treatment will be largely based on what kinds of underlying conditions are causing the problem. A person with high blood pressure may be treated differently than someone who has recently undergone prostate cancer surgery. Always consult you physician before pursuing any treatment option.
