Prosthetic Erectile Dysfunction Remedies
One device that is commonly used to help ED patients achieve and sustain an erection is a prosthetic penile implant. It is one of the safest and most effective erectile dysfunction remedies for those who are unresponsive to various drug treatments.
These devices have come a long way since they were first used. Early implants were known to cause infection and they sometimes would break. They were also looked at as unmasculine, and even intrusive. Even though there are still some risks involved, penile implants have become much more effective and safe than they were a few decades ago.
Today, there are two general types of prosthetic erectile dysfunction remedies: malleable and inflatable.
There are a few different types of malleable implants. One involves inserting a pair of semi-rigid rods into the penis. Others consist of a metal or plastic shell with a smaller, inner shell inside. Some can be adjusted a little, and others will hold their shape permanently.
The major disadvantage of this type of implant is that the penis is erect at all times. Even with some adjustability built in, they are still at least partially erect all the time. This could make things uncomfortable for regular non-sexual functioning. The implantation process, however, is quite easy.
The most popular type of implant is the inflatable version.
This type of implant achieves the same goal by a slightly different approach. This device consists of a small pump and a reservoir that contains some type of fluid. This is connected to a narrow tube that is inserted into the penis. The entire apparatus is hidden from view because the pump and release mechanism are surgically implanted in the scrotum.
The device can be activated by the man, or his partner, squeezing the pump. This will fill the tube inside the penis with fluid, causing it to become erect. To release the fluid back into the holding reservoir, a simple release valve can be activated by pressing on it or bending the penile shaft.
All inserts have an antibiotic coating that keeps them from causing infection. Only between 2-3% of users report experiencing infections, according to Cornell University's Urology department.
Overall, these erectile dysfunction remedies and devices are very effective, and users are generally quite satisfied with the results. In around 15% of cases, repairs or adjustments are required to achieve the desired results.
Around 85% of penile implant users report having the same one ten years later.
Obviously, just like any medical procedure, this has it's share of risks and side effects. Sensitivity and pain are possible, in addition to infection. This usually shows up soon after the procedure or during the first use. If the device has to be removed or re-inserted, there is a chance of tissue scarring inside the penis. As always, sit down with your doctor and decide which erectile dysfunction remedies is best for you.
