What are Psychological Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

There are some people who suffer from psychological causes of erectile dysfunction which makes it sometimes difficult to treat ED. This is especially so since the physical and mental causes can be interrelated in many conditions for an ED sufferer.

An example of this would be a person who is taking anti-depressant medication. ED could be caused by either the depression or the medication. The difficulty is in determining which one it is.

In many cases, the cause is probably a combination of the physical and psychological causes of erectile dysfunction.

It's no secret that the body is affected by the state of the mind. Fatigue and lethargy can result from depression. This can also work the other way as physical condition can affect the state of the mind. If a person feels irritable, they will probably become irritable. This can often lead to changes in sexual desire and performance.

Such circumstances are also often amplified in another kind of feedback mechanism.

This cause and effect pattern can continue, and get even worse in the case of ED causing decreased sexual desire. This could ultimately lead to severe depression, which will not only affect a person's sexual desire; it will also show up negatively in other aspects of life.

Sometimes the underlying psychological causes of erectile dysfunction are temporary. Examples of this include decreased sexual desire because of worries over job security and financial issues. Any type of mild depression or worry can result in temporary impotence, especially if the situation isn't likely to work itself out soon. If the erection problem is short-lived, it is normally not referred to as ED. It is, however, if the problem continues for a few weeks or more.

Depression will vary in severity from person to person. Everyone will experience some form of mild depression from time to time. The problem is when the condition does not pass in a reasonable amount of time. When a recurring pattern of depression develops, the result could be failure to achieve an erection.

For years, impotence of any kind would almost shatter a man's self-esteem. The longer the condition persisted, the harder it was to deal with and correct.

Even though this is still a problem for some, it is certainly less common than it once was. In today's world, there is less association between sexuality and masculinity than there used to be. As more is learned about temporary impotence, it is easier to come to terms with. This also makes it easier to deal with. Anxiety has also decreased due to better methods of dealing with long term psychological causes of erectile dysfunction.

All of these factors have aided in eliminating much of the negative feedback pattern. This has led to men being better able to face the condition head on and find suitable ED solutions.
