Ergots and Midrin for Migraines Treatment
Ergots and Midrin are two common treatments for migraine headaches. They do however, have certain side effects to be aware of.
Ergots are known as 5-HT1B/1D agonists, and are similar to compounds known as triptans. They inhibit the activity of biochemicals by taking their place on the nerve receptors. Due to the fact that they are one of the oldest forms of migraine treatment, there is much information available on their effectiveness and side effects.
Research shows that caution should be taken when this type of treatment is used. They have proven to be less reliable than Maxalt and Zomig (two types of triptans) that are commonly used.
One form of ergot comes in a nasal spray, and is known as DHE (dihydroergotamine). This form allows it to enter the blood stream quickly, through the thin membranes of the nasal passage. However, this and other ergots, such as Ergomar, Wigraine, Cafergot, and others, have their fair share of side effects.
Actually one of the adverse affects of ergots is the way they do their job. Their purpose is to constrict blood vessels, and in doing so, they create some problems. People who suffer from heart and kidney ailments can be harmfully affected if there is excessive blood vessel constriction. There is also another side effect to be mindful of.
Blood vessel dilation has been blamed for causing migraines for many years. it is said that pain signals are sent to the nerve cells due to the volume and pressure changes in the dilating blood vessels. Although this is a part of it, more recent studies have pointed to another possible contributor. Research is still ongoing, but it is now believed that genetic abnormalities in the brain's nerve cells may play a bigger role than the previously thought causes.
With this being the case, treating migraines by constricting the blood vessels may not actually be addressing the real problem. If this is true, it may not be worth the possible side effects that come along with this type of drug. Blood vessels in the heart are preferentially constricted by ergots, and this usually tends to last longer than that of triptans.
Ergots may also worsen certain symptoms that are experienced with migraines. Nausea and vomiting would be an example of this. On the other hand, triptans work with nausea reducing elements. Pregnant women should also avoid ergots. There is a possibility of miscarriage due to constricting of the uterus.
Migraines and tension headaches are also treated with Midrin. This compound is composed of isometheptene (blood vessel constrictor), dichloralphenazone (mild sedative), and acetaminophen, which is a pain reliever. Risk groups for this include those with high blood pressure, glaucoma and kidney disease, and the side effects show up as dizziness and skin rash.
Midrin and ergots are known as abortive drugs. This means they are taken when the symptoms begin. They are more effective the earlier they are taken during an episode. They have been effective as part of a treatment program for those who suffer from mild to moderate migraines.
Be sure to speak with your physician about possible treatment options for migraines or any type of persistent headache.
