Ibuprofen Headache Medication and Treatment
Ibuprofen falls into a category of drugs known as Non-Steriodal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, or NSAID. By looking at their name, it's not hard to figure out how they work. They are designed to reduce inflammation, just like aspirin. Inflammation expands and irritates tissue, which sends pain signals to the brain. When the inflammation goes away, so does the pain.
Many different conditions are treated with the use of ibuprofen, as is the case with aspirin. However, just like aspirin, ibuprofen comes with it's own side effects. Some of the more common side effects include upset stomach, blood in stool and vomit, and dizziness.
There are other possible side effects as well, including swelling of the tongue and throat due to allergic reaction, fluid retention and ringing in the ears. People who suffer from heart conditions should avoid ibuprofen. This is because it works by changing the composition of the blood, just like aspirin.
Caution should also be used by those who have liver or kidney conditions. It's also recommended that people who suffer from ulcers or take coagulation medication avoid it as well. This is also true of those who have high blood pressure and heart disease. Other common side effects are nausea and diarrhea.
Ibuprofen can be used by pregnant women, but only during the early stages. It's especially important to avoid use during the third trimester of pregnancy. This is due to possible birth defects. Harmful substances can be passed from mother to fetus through the bloodstream. Consult your physician before taking any medication during pregnancy.
Many side effects can be avoided or reduced by taking the medication as directed. The liquid form should be taken from a measuring spoon or medicine cup. Avoid consuming alcohol when you are taking ibuprofen. If possible, take it with a glass of milk to make it easier on the stomach.
This drug is not recommended for use with other over-the-counter medications. There are many drugs that should not be combined with ibuprofen. Some of these are steroids, like prednisone, lithium, and diuretics.
One advantage of ibuprofen is that it is useful for treating a wide range of different headaches. It is very effective for treating acute mountain sickness (AMS), which is associated with high altitudes. This makes it a popular choice for those who spend a lot of time on airplanes.
There is no definite answer to the question of which headache treatment is the best. Whether it's ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or aspirin, the decision will come down to what works best for you.
