Causes of Headaches
There are as many different causes of headaches as there are people who suffer from them. The number of possible headache causes is in the hundreds. Most headaches have fairly common causes, but some are due to an already existing medical problem, such as brain tumor or cerebral aneurysms.
Something as simple as eyestrain from prolonged computer use can cause headaches. Some headaches are caused by sinus inflammation from allergies or head colds. Some people are surprised to know that overuse of certain prescription medications can also cause headaches. This is known as MOH (medication overuse headache).
Constricted blood vessels are thought to be the cause of headaches in many cases, although an exact cause is not known. The blood vessels are lined with nerve fibers that are very pain sensitive. A signal is sent to the brain when these vessels contract. This is probably where the pain originates from since the brain itself cannot feel pain due to a lack of nerve cells.
Some say that migraines and cluster headaches are caused when these blood vessels dilate. There may, however, be other things that contribute to the onset of migraines as well.
Tension headaches are caused by a number of different factors. Tension in the muscles of the neck and jaw are one way these types of headaches are caused. An example of this is a condition known as TMJ. This is a condition caused by the tension in the temporomandibular joint. Basically, this is when the the jaw tightens against the skull.
Secondary headaches are the type that result from an already existing medical condition. Examples of these are encephalitis and brain cancer. These are just a couple of the diseases that can be responsible for headaches. Almost any physical ailment can have headaches as a possible symptom.
Headaches can also be caused by environmental influences. One common environmental cause is carbon monoxide, such as from the exhaust of an automobile. Carbon monoxide poisoning is usually characterized by severe headaches. Those who suffer from allergies often complain of headaches as a symptom. Lead poisoning and food poisoning are also common factors that contribute to headaches. Lead poisoning isn't quite as prevalent as it once was however.
In addition to foods that are contaminated, some people are adversely affected by ingredients in food that most people would not have problems with. A few examples of these types of foods are chocolate and cheese. Large quantities of caffeine have long been blamed for causing headaches in some people. Monosodium glutamate, and other preservatives can bring about headache pain for some people as well. Other things, such as red wine will also cause problems for some.
Some of the most common causes, however, are things that are well within our control. Posture, and other factors can play a major role in producing headache pain. Many problems that produce headaches are associated with the increase in computer use. Neck tension, eyestrain, jaw stress, and facial tightening are all associated with computer use. All of these have been known to contribute to the appearance of headache pain.
Tension headaches make up 85%-90% of all headaches. They can be caused by any one of the factors listed above, or any of a number of other causes. Sometimes, simply changing some of your lifestyle choices can make the difference.
