Cluster Headaches Symptoms, Causes and Treatments
Cluster headaches are probably the most painful type that there is. Fortunately, they are not as common as the other types. About 1/3 of one percent of the population suffers from cluster headaches. These are reported to be one of the most painful things a person can go through, including childbirth.
Cluster headaches symptoms usually show up near the eyes and temples as a hot, stabbing pain. Most times, they will occur at the same time for several days at a time. Even though they are extremely painful, they usually last no more than an hour. Sometimes this pattern continues for several months before they go away. Cluster headaches do not exhibit the warning signs that are common with migraines. These include things like flashing lights.
Researchers are still trying to determine the exact causes of cluster headaches. There is a popular theory that blames abnormalities of the hypothalamus. One of this small gland's responsibilities is regulation of the 'biological clock'. There are several factors that can play a part in the way it behaves.
As is the case with migraines, cluster headaches also prefer one gender over the other. Migraines are experienced by three times as many women as men. On the other hand, cluster headaches affect men more often than women by a ratio of 5:1 to 8:1. The age range of men that suffer from this condition is between 20 and 50 years of age.
There are several treatment options for cluster headaches. However, common headache remedies such as, aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen have proven to be of no value in treating this type of headache.
In some cases, inhaling pure oxygen has provided relief from cluster headache symptoms. This treatment is used once the symptoms have begun. This is what's known as an abortive treatment.
Triptans are another type of drug that are used in the treatment of other types of headaches, including migraines. This drug comes in several different forms. Often, it is injected so that it reaches the bloodstream quicker. It also comes in the form of nasal spray. This may not be the best option for cluster headaches, because a common symptom is swelling of the nasal passages.
Sadly, there are very few effective forms of preventative medications for this condition. This is due to the limited information about what actually causes these headaches. Many prophylactic treatments have been tried, including CCBs (Calcium Channel Blockers), with limited success.
If the problem is extreme, there are a few surgical treatments that have been tried. These include removal of a portion of the brain, nerve blocks, and other neurological procedures. Surgeries of this nature are only used as a last resort.
Researchers are continuing efforts to try and pin down the causes of this painful condition.
