Acetaminophen – Headache Medication and Treatment

Acetaminophen and aspirin are similar in many ways, and different in many others. Acetaminophen is sometimes known as paracetamol, and just like aspirin, it is a pain relieving analgesic. It has a long history of treating headache pain, just like aspirin does. However, the way these two pain relievers work is quite different.

Aspirin concentrates its efforts on the function of hormones called prostaglandin. These hormones are responsible for initiating the inflammation process when we injure ourselves. In other words, when something swells up, prostaglandin is what causes it. The swelling is necessary to begin the healing process by sending more blood to the affected area.

Unlike aspirin and ibuprofen, acetaminophen is not an NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug). This means that it is not useful for treating pain associated with inflammation. It is, however, safe for use during all stages of pregnancy, unlike ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is especially dangerous during the third trimester.

There are certain instances when acetaminophen can be taken when aspirin cannot. One such case is the condition known as Reye's Syndrome. Aspirin is not safe for people with this condition. Another advantage that acetaminophen has over aspirin is that there are fewer side effects, which makes it safer for a number of different people.

Acetaminophen is also less likely to irritate the stomach lining than aspirin. It's also easier on certain organs, such as the kidneys. Acetaminophen does not thin the blood like aspirin does, which makes it useful for people who have blood clotting limitations.

These two compounds are similar in that they both affect an enzyme called COX. The differences arise in how they affect it. Aspirin will reduce the amount of COX, which affects the production of the inflammation hormones called prostaglandin. Acetaminophen does not reduce these enzymes, but it will inhibit the production of the hormones.

If not taken properly, acetaminophen does pose certain risks. Extremely high dosages can cause serious health problems, such as liver damage and even death. If taken every day, rebound headaches are an increased possibility. These risks can be reduced by following dosage guidelines and avoiding alcohol.

There are a few other side effects to be on the lookout for. These include bloody or black, tarry bowel movements, sore throat, and skin rash. Lip ulcers and white spots in the mouth have also been reported in rarer cases.

Acetaminophen is usually safe to take with other over-the-counter pain relief medications. Some of these medicines actually contain a combination of different compounds. Excedrin, for example, contains acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine. Always consult a physician if you begin to experience recurring or persistent headaches.
