Creating a Better Sleep Environment to Help You Sleep

Many people do not realize how much your sleeping environment affects the amount and quality of sleep that you get. The following are some ways to improve your sleeping area.

Room temperature

Falling asleep can become difficult if the temperature or the humidity is too high in your sleeping area. Since the body tends to cool down some during sleep, the temperature of the room should also be slightly cool.

If you sleep alone, it allows you the freedom to set the room temperature at whatever level you like. However, when you share a room, there may be some differences of opinion concerning the proper sleeping temperature. There are ways to make the same room comfortable for everyone who uses it. These include using blankets, adding clothing, or using fans and humidifiers. This way, everyone is able to sleep comfortably.

Noise level

Obviously, it's easier to sleep in a quiet environment as opposed to one that's noisy. Many things can result in interrupted sleep, including traffic sounds, barking dogs, or any number of indoor noises, such as television.

There are a few ways to block out the background noise that may be keeping you from sleeping. Covering your bare floor with rugs, covering windows with heavy drapes, and replacing old single pane windows can help to drown out the sound. The sound of a fan or soothing music can also help. Earplugs are also a good option, if you've tried everything else.

Bedside clock

Sometimes, having your clock in a visible area can also prevent you from getting the sleep you need. It's often harder to fall asleep when you start worrying about how much time you have left until it's time to get up. Turn your clock away from you after you set your alarm so you can't see it. This way, you can relax and just wait until the alarm wakes you.

Sleep in an appropriate bed

Your sleep can also be adversely affected if you are not sleeping in the right kind of bed. Your bed should be big enough for you to stretch out comfortably if you need to. You should also have a firm mattress, with no lumps or soft spots. If your mattress is not comfortable, you will not be able to relax enough to fall asleep.

The good nights of sleep that you get will be well worth the money you spend on a new mattress. Softer sheets and fluffier pillows can also help you get more comfortable. You can't really put a price tag on a good night's sleep.

Sleep in bed

If at all possible, only use your bed for what it was meant for. if you are doing other things in bed like watching television or paying your bills, your body begins to relate things other than sleeping to being in bed.

Lighting

When considering the lighting for your sleeping area, the darker it is, the better you will sleep. No one knows this as well as those who work at night and sleep during the day.
