Sleep Disorders Medication – Over the Counter or Prescription

Anyone who has a sleep disorder knows what a difficult thing it is to live with. Perhaps the disorder causes you to lie awake at night, struggling to fall asleep. Maybe, you wake up extremely early as a result of your sleep disorder. Whatever the case, it is much easier to live with sleep disorders now due to sleep disorder medication.

Although there didn’t used to be any sleep disorder medication, there are now many different options that you can consider. The two main types of sleep disorder medication are over-the-counter and prescription sleep disorder medication. Some doctors disagree over which one of these solutions works the best; others don’t believe that either is a solution to the problem.

Over The Counter Medication - Melatonin
Some sleep disorder medications can be purchased over the counter. One of the main sleep disorder medication that can be bought without a prescription is melatonin. Melatonin isn’t in fact a drug; it is a supplement. The human brain produces natural amounts of melatonin; however, people who do not make enough of it often turn to supplements. Melatonin production rises in the evening and it is this increase that causes a relaxed state and eventual sleep.

This is why many people find that taking an over-the-counter melatonin supplement helps them to sleep better at night. One of the main benefits of taking melatonin as sleep disorder medication is that it is more natural than other forms of medication—while it is a supplement, natural melatonin hormones can be found in the body.

Prescription Drugs
Another option when it comes to sleep disorder medication is asking your doctor for a prescription. These tend to be more effective than over-the-counter sleep disorder medications. The prescription that your doctor will give may vary depending on the exact nature of your sleep disorder. If you have been diagnosed with Restless Leg Syndrome, your doctor may decide to prescribe Larodopa, Sinemet, Parlodel, Requip, Permax, or. Mirapex. If you are being treated fro short-term insomnia, you might be prescribed one of the following sleep disorder medication: Klonopin, Valium, Restoril, Xanax, or Ativan. Although prescription drugs are usually more effective than over-the-counter drugs, they are also more dangerous and tend to have more side effects.

The good news is that, despite what you may think, there are ways that sleep disorders can be treated and controlled by sleep disorder medication. It is important to consult your doctor about what is best for you.
