How to Deal with Parenting Stress

There is nothing more rewarding, but also as challenging, as being a parent. However, you don’t need to stress about it. Obviously patience is required over a long period of time and under many different circumstances. But if you view each issue as a challenge, rather than as a problem, you will find your stress levels receding. Challenges are far more easily overcome than problems, so thinking this way gives you an instant lift.

When “I can’t” and “I must” meet, stress rears up, making things appear more difficult than they have to be. It’s not unusual for parents to want a particular situation to have a certain outcome. However, situations tend to occur that throw the wanted outcome off track. This doesn’t have to result in stress though.

However, it’s unlikely that any changes to the wanted outcome are going to steer your child into a life of destruction. Situations turning out unexpectedly are part of life, and are what helps to keep things interesting. For this reason, stressing over every little detail is not at all beneficial.

There will be times when a certain goal can’t be met. And that’s where being realistic comes into the equation. While you probably feel that certain goals need to be met in order for your child to have a good life, most goals are not mandatory. They’d be nice, but life will go on, even if they’re not met.

The education of your child is a perfect example. You might feel they need to go to a certain school, at a certain time. However, if for some reason this can’t be implemented, it doesn’t mean that your child will now have an unfulfilling or unsuccessful life. There will always be other options available. They may not what you originally wanted, but the options exist.

Having to change your original choices doesn’t have to lead to stress though. Reviewing how to proceed and being concerned about the options available is perfectly normal, but worrying to the point that you begin suffering from insomnia, feel helpless or extremely irritable is not healthy, and are all signs of stress. Just because a goal isn’t reached at the time you had originally planned doesn’t mean you can’t continue to strive for that goal.

The cost of a good college education is a large concern for many parents. However, there are now many options available for financing college payments now, so you don’t need to remortgage your house.

Having a child who doesn’t listen, especially when their behaviour may be dangerous or even violent, can be stressful. Implementing behavioural changes takes time, but it will go much more smoothly if you believe that it is a challenge that you and your family can overcome.

If you’re not sure how to tackle a problem, someone who is proactive in looking for a solution - whether it be through friends, a school counsellor, other family members or the internet – will feel far less stressed than someone who throws up their hands in frustration but doesn’t look for a solution.

What many people don’t realize is that you hold the key to reducing your stress levels. If you choose to actively look for a solution, and then implement the steps required, you’ll find your stress levels dropping dramatically.
