Stress - How NOT To Deal with Stress
The physical and emotional symptoms of stress can be dealt with using several techniques. Both short term and long term cures are available for acute and chronic stress. It is vital though that you don’t make things worse by implementing a strategy that will add to the stress, rather than help to relieve it. Some common errors people often make when dealing with stress are listed below.
It is not unusual for someone suffering from stress to begin using self-destructive behaviour in an attempt to help relieve the tension caused by stress.
Lashing out at friends and family is not unusual, though this does nothing to help the underlying problem. Some people turn to alcohol, or large amounts of coffee ‘to get them through’. However, the high caffeine intake coupled with dehydration can cause further stress symptoms, sometimes triggering aggressive behaviour.
It is not uncommon for someone suffering from stress to find themselves dealing with insomnia. Stress can cause physical tension, which makes it difficult to relax deeply, which is needed in order to fall asleep. If you do manage to fall asleep, you will find that you wake up un-rested.
It is possible to take sleeping medication, but this will not help you deal with the actual problem that is causing the stress, and can create dependence issues as well. It is better to try to use natural methods, such as meditation or aromatherapy in order to relax yourself into a peaceful state so that you can sleep.
Though of course it’s essential to deal with the problem that is causing the stress, obsessing about the problem isn’t healthy. You need to be able to view the problem objectively in order to start working towards fixing the problem.
Avoidance is also a common error. Taking on extra work or projects so that you don’t have the time or energy to deal with the problem causing the stress is counter productive. The extra work is likely to add to the stress, as you find that you drain yourself physically and emotionally.
Occasionally the problem may be something that will clear itself up. However, failing to deal with an issue usually is not going to make it go away. Taking some time away from the problem to clear your head is perfectly acceptable. Refusing to acknowledge the problem is not.
All of the incorrect techniques are all based on ignoring, or refusing to acknowledge the underlying issue. However, problems do not magically disappear just because you choose not to think about the situation. Face each problem as a challenge, rather than as something that is going to ruin your life, and you find that it is much easier to deal with. When you view problems as insurmountable, it can lead to stress. When you think of a problem as something to work through, the stress will melt away.
