Conquering Stress – How to Conquer Stress

There are hundreds of articles that deal with managing stress, but wouldn’t it be better if you could conquer it completely? There are many things that you can do towards that end, and below are some ideas that you can implement into your life immediately.

Asian countries have known for centuries the benefits of Yoga, Tai-Chi and similar meditative exercises in helping to relieve stress. Both mind and body is worked on, as you focus your thoughts on your breathing as you move your muscles.

Meditation on its own has also been practiced throughout the world for centuries by many cultures. Simple and effective, anyone can learn the techniques of meditation, and it can be effective even if used for only a few minutes per day, though a longer period of at least 20 minutes is recommended. Because you train yourself to focus on something relaxing, any stressful thoughts you may have can be pushed out of the mind, helping to calm you. Evidence also suggests that by using meditation regularly, you will see physical benefits as well.

If you do find that you are stressed, try some deep breathing exercises. This helps to calm your mind and allows you time to assess, rather than simply react. Being able to clear your head is a great way to work towards curing your stress. If you are at home, try lying face down on a towel or yoga mat, with your hands flat on the floor, under your chest. Once you’re comfortable, try taking three or four deep, regulated breaths. You should find that because you are focused on your breathing, your stress levels decrease.

Elevating serotonin levels can help with stress. This can be done with dietary supplements, but be careful not to simply buy something that offers a ‘miracle’ cure.

Sleeping well is vital to lowering stress levels, so if stress is causing you to loose sleep, then sleeping aids can be useful, when used rarely. You should not however use sleeping pills to avoid the problem, but if necessary, use a sleeping pill so that you can get a good nights rest and face the problem refreshed and clear headed.

Many people find that aromatherapy, teamed with ‘mood music’ is helpful in helping to lower their stress levels. Though any large amount of scientific evidence is unavailable, people find that certain blends can help to relax them.

Music on its own can also help to change your mood. While it’s not going to cure any problems, listening to something you associate with happiness or a pleasant past event can shift your mood and alter your perspective.

A massage is also highly beneficial. When you’re stressed, it’s not unusual to carry large amounts of tension in the neck, shoulders and calves. Relieving this tension goes a long way to helping you feel refreshed and more likely to be able to think things through, rather than simply reacting.

Psychotherapy, in rare cases, may be used to help combat stress. It is important that you do your research though, as the techniques used vary from practitioner to practitioner. It is best to go off recommendations by people who have seen a particular practitioner, rather than going in without any idea of what is in store for you.
