Curing Stress at Work – How to Cure Stress at Work

For many the workplace is a place of stress. Unfair managers, deadlines to meet without the required resources provided and too heavy workloads are all factors that can cause stress for many people. It is important to realise though that there are always options available.

Try implementing some exercises shown to relieve stress as you try to deal with the underlying issue. Neck and muscle tension, shallow breathing and a compromised immune system can all be signs of stress. There are things you can do though to help combat the symptoms.

Slowly take a couple of deep breaths. There is no need to go into a meditative state, simply fill your lungs with air to help relieve any tension. Move your head from side to side before stretching your arms and shoulders.

While breathing deeply, you should also try to shift your focus from the issue that is stressing you. Stress can make it difficult to concentrate and to remember information, so it helps to move your thoughts away from whatever is causing the irritation.

If possible, close your eyes while breathing deeply. Let go of the problem by focusing on something that brings you happiness – your family, a joke that makes you smile or a favourite song. It doesn’t matter what you use to shift your focus, as long as you can move your thoughts from the issue that is troubling you.

Once you have worked on the symptoms, you can begin to work on the underlying cause.

Some people decide to start their own business. This of course presents many new challenges, but people find that they are happy to meet these challenges when they have the authority to deal with each situation as they see fit. A new business normally means long hours with little to show for it in the beginning, but to many people, having their own business is reward enough.

The idea of running their own business doesn’t appeal to everyone though. Some people will instead try to implement changes in their current workplace. Not only do they feel that they’re helping themselves, but their co-workers can also benefit from this. This tactic also has the advantage of making people feel that they’re not sitting idly by in a bad situation.

If possible, you might consider transferring to a different department, or rejoice in the fact that your unfair boss will no longer be your direct superior in the future. In most companies, it’s rare for things to stay the same for longer than twelve months, so if you’re a patient person, you can normally wait out most situations.

Make sure that if you do stay in your current job, you focus on the things that you can control, and let the things out of your control go. Look for support from cooperative co-workers, and ignore those who seek to make things worse.

If you need to, rant to a friend or family member, but while at work, stay focused on what you can do, and let everything else go.
