Tackling Stress in the Modern World
Today’s busy lifestyles mean that it’s likely at some point that you will suffer from stress. There are many benefits that have come from this technological, fast paced age, but along with the good is the bad. Up to date news from around the world can be sourced, but this means quicker deadlines are in place. Emails are great to stay in touch, but they also eat into your day, as people use this medium to communicate about things that previously would not have been bothered with.
What you can do though is take advantage of the additional options for dealing with stress that come with advanced technology.
Perhaps your boss is harsh and demanding, setting deadlines that are almost impossible to reach, or giving you work to complete without the required resources. To offset this effect, maybe you can telecommute, or work more flexible hours.
Of course, technology can provide its own challenges. The invention of computers means that workers are expected to complete more in a day than in previous times. Working on a computer is less labour intensive though, so this is not unreasonable. Another advantage is that computers have opened up the entire world to people. It’s now possible to have friends spread across the world, and remain in close contact with them, something that was almost impossible before computers.
Stress, studied at a psychological level, is beginning to find that certain things will impact, either positively or negatively on stress. It will take time to compile all the data, but there are already helpful factors coming out.
The science of both sports and diet are far more well known than they were even ten years ago. Studies have shown that exercise and a good diet go a long way to helping to reduce and relieve stress.
Money is often a factor in stress, but it is important to remember that things like food and housing, medical treatment and transportation cost far less relative to today’s incomes than what they did a generation ago. Most two-driver families now have at least two vehicles, something that was unheard of twenty or thirty years ago.
That doesn’t mean that life doesn’t get stressful. If you watch the news, the world provides a never ending list of stressors. And yet people continue to live, many quite happily, despite the news coverage that indicates that the world is coming apart. It is often the small things, those things not shown on the news, that matter most in peoples lives.
Of course, situations can arise that are difficult to deal with. However, this doesn’t have to result in stress. By dealing with the things that are in your control, and letting go of those that aren’t, you’ll find that your stress levels will recede dramatically. If you apply this to every situation, you’ll find that stress is no longer a problem in your life.
